Entrepreneurship in the Air

18 Jan

Something seems to be in the air these days as everyone around me seems to be getting bit by either the career break bug or the entrepreneurship bug. Till a couple of years back, these words seemed to be associated with people who either had a good financial backing or women quitting for family reasons or with people with no jobs. But more recently things seem to be changing. I am coming across a lot of friends, acquaintances, fellow bloggers who have left good careers / jobs to follow their hearts and actually make the effort to start something from scratch and build it up to a profitable enterprise. Now, this is definitely not easy as you are leaving a well settled, secure and a cushy job to voluntarily take up the risk of failures, cash flow issues, insecurities at times, etc etc. But on the other side – you are doing something that you like and building something that is yours. And the high of it, is just something unimaginable.

While I also get into these phases at times, I haven’t had the courage yet or been ready to take a hit on my material comforts. But two of my very good friends have been bit by the entrepreneurial bug and have set up very successful enterprises of their own. So this post is to introduce them and their successful enterprise

Koonik – For my childhood friend, Sonal (a sensible banker) a trip to the market to buy baby gifts was a “eureka moment” which gave rise to a business idea and Koonik was born.

And that's Sonal

And that’s Sonal

Koonik makes ‘Baby Safe’ products that are designed in-house; here clothes are made from 100% soft organic cotton and toys are handmade out of soft ivory wood and are coated with dyes derived from vegetables and fruit extracts. Sonal’s amazing designing sense has also given birth to some beautiful baby clothes and toys that are gorgeous, cuddly, super super cute and most of all – baby safe.

Recently I was looking to buy some gifts for 3 of my nieces .I bought the following farm animals and just can’t write how much of a hit they were with the kids. I became the instant favorite aunt and the toys – they became kids to these kids. The hippo now eats idlis & dosas, the piggy is a baby and is put to sleep in its own baby bed every day and the peacock goes to play school.

Enmarkit – For my other friends Vipin (a venture capital investor), meeting loads of start-ups for potential investments threw up the business opportunity.

Vipin and Ekta

Vipin and Ekta

He realized that all these start-ups with products and services needed a single platform for their listing and integrated marketing. With this idea Enmarkit was born which provides a common listing platform integrated with all social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn. Now Vipin’s wife, Ekta has also quit her successful job and is part of this venture.

Anyone can use Enmarkit in numerous ways. As a potential seller you can list your products / services on it and as a potential buyer, you can buy these products/ services. But since I am a travel blogger, I have enlisted my personalized travel planning services on it. So the potential travelers can reach out to me and have me plan their trip for them while the other travel bloggers can list their own travel planning services here. Additionally, numerous homestays have also created their listings. So if you need homestays you can check them out here and if you have a homestay, then you can enlist it here.

I have many more friends who are setting up their own successful ventures and soon I shall write about all of them too 🙂

    Hi Snigdha,

Wow, both of these start-ups are quite interesting. Maybe I’ll head over to their place in some time to check their stuff out. Thanks for sharing this with all of us. 🙂

    Regards
