Photo Essay – Kovalam Beach

25 Aug

Kovalam, meaning a grove of coconut trees, is a small fishing beach village near the capital city of Trivandrum in the state of Kerala. True to its name, it offers an endless sight of coconut trees, long stretches of beaches and the wide expanse of the open Arabian Sea. I have traveled to Kovalam before on a day trip before but earlier this year, I had an opportunity to spend a weekend here and managed to capture some of its beautiful sights that day trip visitors miss through my camera lens. Sharing some of them with you below.

Kovalam has 3 beautiful crescent-shaped beaches separated by rocky cliffs, where each beach is serene, shallow and projects a sense of calmness all around. Hence these are ideal for swimming, sun bathing and snorkeling.

Fisherman still fish in these waters and if you wake up early, then you tend to catch a sight of numerous fisherman pushing their boats in the sea and setting sail for the day’s catch.

These fishermen either fish in groups in a long-boat,

Or just by themselves in these narrow flat boats in a small area –

Numerous storks also stand near the rocks trying to catch their breakfast of smaller fish and insects –

But while everyone was out at hard work, there were a few like us too who found the prospect of lazing on these sun-beds all day the most inviting.

Then just gaze out at the sea and the coconut trees as far as the eyes can see.

And just end the day while watching a gorgeous sunset into the sea with gorgeous colors of the sky. 🙂

Looks very inviting if you’re on the beach-lazing, rather than fishing end! (I salute those hard-working fisherman – looks like they catch a lot of sun out there.)

I know 🙂 Also I understand that fishing is very hard work and not as easy as it seems.

    Lovely!
We stayed at a hotel by the beach in Kovalam.
And every morning, we loved to head to the beach to watch the fishermen set sail – they sang a song with full gusto and enthusiasm while they did this, and we were completely enchanted.
