On World Heritage Day this year (i.e. on April 18) I had posted a photo essay on Celebrating World Heritage Day with 10 Heritage Monuments from India. And while shortlisting pictures for this post, I came across some other beautiful pictures and sights in India, that just compelled me to write this post. Hence posting another photo essay on 10 beautiful sights to see in India that too in a unique way.
Now all of us visit the typical touristy sights at some point in time or the other, but with my own travels I have discovered that many of these places are even more stunning or beautiful when some minor natural / artificial elements, ceremonies, etc are introduced or amended. And I feel that in some ways, these sights then become a unique travel souvenir – images in your own memory or a wonderful story. This is also what takes your holiday to a whole new level. I am sharing 10 of my own such memories (from my recent visits) with you today –
1. Waiting and waiting for that rare yet wondrous sight of the snow-covered Kangchenjunga peak on a day with clear blue sky (and this is very rare :), West Bengal – Sikkim –
2. A sight that never fails to inspire, the beautifully lit up Golden Temple and its reflection, Amritsar, Punjab –
3. Being a part of history at the Asiatic Library and then sitting on its steps watching the present go by, Mumbai, Maharashtra –
4. Watching a magical desert sunset and its very many colors, Jaisalmer, Rajasthan. Extremely recommended for self introspection 🙂
5. Exploring Mumbai in the rains, with a lit up Gateway of India and its reflection in rain water, Mumbai, Maharashtra –
6. Being at the southmost tip of India at sunset and feeling insignificant, Kanyakumari,Tamil Nadu –
7. Experiencing a Buddhist Monastery and chanting along with the monks, Coorg, Karnataka –
8. Fish with these Chinese Fishing nets and then see their gorgeous silhouette against sunset, Kochi, Kerala-
9. The meditation hall of Matrimandir in Auroville that during the daytime reminds me of a glowing sun stepping on the ground, Pondicherry –
10. The stunning statue of Lord Bahubali standing tall and open to nature at Shravanabelagola, Karnataka. You should visit it in the morning when people are praying and cleansing the deity (done everyday) or during the Mahamastakabhisheka held once in 12 years –
Do you have any such unique memories, then do share below or tweet at traveler_budget. 🙂

Two things 1) Kanyakumari is in TamilNadu.(Picture still reads Kerala 🙂 2) Great pictures but the logo on the pictures surely kinda diminishes the viewing pleasure..especially the bold and right in the middle embedding…please.

A great list, I was in India recently and had a great morning on the fishing nets in Kochi. I then later joined the team for a huge seafood lunch of our catch.

Excellent..I was recently in India for five months and some of my favourite places are in this post – Kanchenjunga (so happy you’ve got this at the top!), the Golden Temple (also up the top in its rightful place!), and the powerful Kanyakumari. A very special country you have and great that you’re putting some less-known places out there for people to learn about. Nice to reminisce with you 🙂
