Will you believe me if I tell you that that I stayed in a room by the beach with sand under my feet and sound of waves to keep me company while I was in Heidelberg (a landlocked town in Germany)? Well I kid you not, courtesy the Hip Hotel, I actually stayed in a room in Malolo with a view of the beach, sand and palms and the sounds of waves without even stepping foot in Malolo.
Before my trip, I read a quick introduction and review of this hotel and was aware that it’s a 4-star boutique hotel built inside a historic 250-year-old building in the Old Town of Heidelberg. Its unique feature is that its rooms are individually decorated in the different stylesfrom the famous international cities from around the world. I was very curious before my visit and kept wondering – which city I would stay in – and was looking forward to the surprise and the whole experience.
I took the train to Heidelberg and then reached the hotel very easily by a direct public bus. The bus stop is literally a 2 minute walk from the hotel and within no time I was checking into the hotel. The check-in was really smooth and I was super thrilled to hear that I will be staying at the Malolo :). I walked up an old wooden banister to the third floor with small elements all around adding a nice quaint charm to the place. I very happily walked up to my room and opened to door to get the biggest surprise of the trip. Though I knew that Malolo meant the décor would be like a beach, however I was just not prepared for the amazing interiors. My room was divided into 2 sections to give an impression of living on a shack by the beach. An entire wall had wall paper showing a beautiful golden sandy beach and then there was actual sand and beach artifacts tastefully placed around the room. There was an audio with sound of the waves playing somewhere in the room. There was even a small seating section with chairs to sit and enjoy the beautiful views of the beach. It goes without saying that after the initial shock wore off, I just loved my room. The hotel has gone an extra step in taking care of the minute details that were beautifully placed around the room.
There is a small restaurant in the hotel fashioned like a tavern but I didn’t have any meals in the hotel. The staff is amazingly helpful and very accommodating. On the day of my departure I wanted to check-out a bit late and they were really helpful and accommodating about my request.

My overall verdict on Hip Hotel? I stayed here for 2 nights and loved the entire Malolo experience. I loved my room and spent a lot of my time by the beach enjoying the view. The hotel location is very good – its right next to the bus station, walking distance to everything in Old Town and there are loads of options for meals and shopping around. The staff was really accommodating and helpful. My only feedback is that I would have liked additional vegetarian options to eat at breakfast.
