Top 5 must visit shopping places in Phnom Penh

11 Aug

Shopping in Phnom Penh is a must indulge in activity as you get to interact with loads of locals (despite not being able to communicate with many of them it’s still fun to interact with them), shop for some innovative local stuff and get to experience another aspect of this gorgeous and vibrant city. Though there are no malls here, there are still loads of small stores, chic boutiques and in some instances loads of shops aggregated in a building. However there are some ground rules to be followed here, else you will be in danger of loosing an arm and a leg (in terms of price paid for the stuff bought) –

  1. First, never believe the first price quoted by the shop keeper. It will always be an inflated price.
  2. Second, never buy jewelry or any jewels from here (unless you recognize originals from fake) no matter how big a steal it seems. 99 out of 100 times you will be fleeced.
  3. And most importantly, Bargaining is a must (it happens even in supermarkets and shops). Practice bargaining before you set foot into these shops as at times the prices are inflated as much as double the original price.

We spent a good half a day shopping and learning more in this city. The top 5 places that are worth a visit here are –

My Top Picks to Shop for in Prague

26 May

Prague is one of may favourite cities in Europe as its old, quaint and beautiful. However it is an amazing city for shopping too, especially for a budget traveller, as you find some really cute and unusual stuff here at very affordable prices. During our trip we saw and bought some really pretty and cute stuff here, like comic coasters of Prague sites, a bookmark with a small book at one end and a pair of spectacles at the other end of a thread, beautiful lace, magnets, key chains, glass painted stuff  etc etc. Hence it was not surprising that we bought a lot of gifts for friends and family from here, considering that during the rest of our travel we were in expensive cities and couldn’t buy much 🙂

Amongst all the things that I liked in Prague,  my top 5 picks for a “must buy” / or things that you must check out here are –

Beautiful Chinese Tea Pots

24 Apr

Whenever people visit Singapore and decide to go shopping – they either hit one of the many malls (on Orchard Street) or like my fellow Indians hit the Mustafa stores (in Little India).

But if you ever find yourself in Singapore and have the time for some unusual shopping, then please make the effort and visit Chinatown. No, it’s not recommended for the cheap Chinese goods, but for finding some of the most unusual stuff and that too of all kinds. It’s one of those places that you can literally find anything – from the most quaint of things to the most funny / weird stuff and the likes of me can just spend hours browsing through it all.

Belgian Chocolates

28 Mar

Whenever there is any discussions on deserts, I am always reminded of Belgium and its famous – waffles and chocolates.

We got a chance to sample the Belgian chocolates in Bruges, where every street, corner and nearly every third shop was selling these mouth-watering deserts. It’s like you control an urge to binge at one window, only to encounter another one in the next 5 seconds. What we found even more fascinating was  that apart from the actual taste of these chocolates, there was an added emphasis on its looks / display.

We took a picture of a display window of one such chocolate shop. Please note that every piece on display (except the ribbons and the teddy bear) is made of super yum chocolate. The sheer variety in terms of flavors / colors / shapes / sizes available here is mind-boggling.
