Little Bar in a small corner of Zermatt

2 Mar

Travel introduces us to many new sights, some that we may be familiar with and some that we come across unexpectedly. While its fun to experience the things that are known, I believe that it’s the sights and situations that we unexpectedly stumble upon that adds to the adventure of the holiday.

On our first night in Zermatt, despite the weather and the cold, we decided to head out and explore the Zermatt night life. We visited a few bars that were recommended to us, but they all opened much later in the evening. Hence we decided to enter this small bar that was in a basement and all we could we see from the road was the sign that said “Little Bar”.

Taste of my visit to Europe – at Romantik Restaurant Julen, Zermatt

1 Mar

Switzerland as a country reminded me a lot of India with its varied multicultural and regional influences. Depending on which part of Switzerland you find yourself in, you can actually experience a bit of French, German and Italian in everything – from culture, to language, to cuisine, to landscapes. However it still has many things, originally Swiss too. During my own visit to Zermatt, I learnt that Switzerland was historically a country of farmers, hence traditional Swiss dishes tend to have potatoes and cheese as its core ingredients. But with Zermatt’s proximity to Italy (it’s just across the Alps here) there is a distinct Italian influence in the local cuisine.

Walking around Zermatt and my first Ice Skating experience

23 Feb

Just like a dream, I was recently invited by Swiss TourismMaison de Voyage and Rock-On Holidays by Thomas Cook India to experience Switzerland in a unique way. While enough has been said and written about the romantic / family vacations of Switzerland our idea was to leave out all the famous / touristy activities and instead  explore this country through a new lens i.e.  through the eyes and activities of a single budget traveler. Hence our itinerary included all kinds of adventure sports, walks and many new experiences that people normally don’t associate with Switzerland. And I continue my tales from where I left it in my previous post.

My Reflections on 2013 and Expectations from 2014

3 Jan

As I sit down to write this post today, I can’t help feeling that 2013 has just flown by. It seems like one minute I was penning down my travel targets and resolutions for 2013 (you can read more on it at 2012, the year that went by and 2013, the year to come) and suddenly it’s time to plan for 2014. But a year has definitely gone by and a lot has been achieved, many lessons learnt and many stories collected. When I had set my targets my 2013, I was so focused on travel that I set all my targets and energies just around it, but in the real journey I actually ended up learning so much more and meeting so many amazing people that I feel I have grown as a traveler and a person.

Weekly Photo Challenge – Grand

7 Dec

This week’s weekly photo challenge is to share an image of something “Grand”. But the idea is to not just share an image of a large object / scene, but have a special element or a “wow factor” that makes the picture truly stunning. And for this topic, I decided to share pictures of the majestic “Matterhorn” that we visited from Zermatt in Switzerland. The Matterhorn is one of highest and the most photographed peaks in Europe and a spectacular sight. We saw it from many points and I am sharing some of these sights with you –

  • From Gornergrat – This picture is my favorite from the trip and was clicked around sunset from Gornergrat. This image was special as the Matterhorn had been hidden by clouds and mist the whole day, and just when we thought that we will not get a good image, the clouds cleared and we got this gorgeous view and image. I also love this fence that adds another beautiful element and geometry to this pic.

Weekly Photo Challenge – Let there be Light

5 Dec

The week’s weekly photo challenge is “Let there be Light” where we had to share a photo of a light source. Light is an essential element of photography and is even apart of the word  i.e. photos- for “light” and -graphos for “drawing”. Playing with various light sources, its placement, its intensity, etc gives a new / different look to the pictures and helps the artist in the photographer create a new masterpiece. I love playing with light in my pictures too and taking pictures of various light sources, especially the sun, candles and lamps. But for this challenge I decided to share 2 simple pictures using just 2 different sources of light i.e. Sun for the natural source (outdoors) and Bulb for the artificial source (indoors).

This pic was taken around sunset over Lake Thun on our way back from Niederhorn. I love the natural colors of the Sun, the dramatic effects of the clouds all around and the shadow in the Lake Thun below.
