5 reasons why you should plan for a picnic by Lake Bled

13 Feb

Bled is a nature lovers paradise with numerous things that you can visit or activities that you can do – you can visit the Vintgar Gorge, or Hike in the Triglav National Park or try one of the many options available in adventure sports. But for lunch I recommend packing a picnic basket and spending an entire afternoon in the gardens that surround Lake Bled. Guide books say that this lake was formed at the end of the Ice Age after the recession of the Bohinj glacier. And makes a stunning sight.

Here are my 5 reasons why you should definitely spend an afternoon here with a packed lunch and a book.

Enjoy the stunning vistas all around – Here you are surrounded by stunning views of a blue-green waters against the backdrop of verdant hills and a picturesque golf course. There is also a quaint island in the centre with a picture perfect baroque church to complete the view. You can just keep staring at it for hours and have your fill of serene nature for the soul.

Take a boat ride and visit the Bled Island – You can take a row-boat and visit the Bled Island and the Church of Assumption. This Church dates back to 1698 and has well-preserved frescoes that depict scenes from the life of Virgin Mary. A local custom here is to climb the stairs and ring the wishing bell, that was installed in the original church in 1534.

Spend some time with the locals of the lake – This lake has its own inhabitants i.e. quite a few swans, mallard ducks and some other local varieties of ducks. These are pretty friendly and walk all around where you are sitting and some even come up to you and walk all around you. They are a big hit with kids.

Beautiful gardens and walkways – There are some beautiful walking trails around the lake that you can explore at a leisure or just make the 15 minute steep climb to visit the Bled Castle. You can walk around the castle and also capture the most common and stunning tourist brochure picture of the Bled Island surrounded by Lake Bled and the verdant hills all around.

Try hand at photography and capture the beautiful interplay of color all around – The more you walk around the Lake the more nature seems to reveal itself to you. You come across the beautiful changing colors of the water, trees dipping their leaves in the water and lending their own bit of green to it, the pure white color of the swan reflecting against the blue-green of the water and many more such beautiful scenes. Though everything can’t be caught on camera, it’s still worth a try to try and capture your perfect picture postcard moment of the holiday here in Bled.

Did you manage to visit Bohinj? Much like Bled but quieter, even more scenic 😊

Great photos. Loved my time in Bled, the views around the lake are like something out of a storybook! The church on the island was a highlight for me, I hope to go back someday.

I first learned of Lake Bled from a friend who travels frequently for work. His pictures were amazing. I’d never thought about a picnic there, but it sounds like the perfect spot with gorgeous scenery.
